Een sluiting voelden ze al wel een tijdje aankomen, maar toch nog niet meteen! Verschillende verenigingen en heel wat occasioneel-recreatieve schaatslustigen zouden zo verweesd achterblijven. Want Antartica is geen volwaardig alternatief, en er zou wel een verse stedelijk-olympische ijsbaan komen, maar pas over een paar jaar.
